Nuggets Trading JR Smith?

December 23, 2009

Dave Krieger over at the Denver Post had a great idea to make the Denver Nuggets jump up to the serious title contender status, trade JR Smith for a big man.  He’s right on that this is a team needs to focus on winning a championship while they have Chauncey Billups, and at 33 you have to wonder how many more years he can perform at a high level.

The two main problems that Krieger points out for the Nuggets are that they are not big enough, and not serious enough.  He thinks exchanging JR Smith for a frontcourt player will go a long way to curing both problems.

Who does he have in mind?  Marc Gasol of the Memphis Grizzlies, Marcus Camby of the LA Clippers, and David Lee of the New York Knicks.  All three teams should be trying to accumulate talent and there is no denying that the 24-year-old Smith has potential.

The best fit to me seems to be Camby.  The Clippers are rebuilding and Camby is 35-years-old so he shouldn’t be in their long-term plans.  Denver knows exactly what they are getting out of him since he is a former Nugget.  He helped the team out a great deal with rebounding, which is what they need since Denver currently ranks 24th in the category.

It would be a great deal if the two teams could make it happen.  I like JR Smith but his lack of consistency leads to ups and downs for a team that is trying to win a world title.
