NBA Week 8 Power Rankings

December 23, 2009

Sports Betting at the Sportsbook

One of the best way to make more accurate NBA picks is to have a set of power rankings that you can refer to.  This helps to give you some kind of ranking system to see if a team is favored when they shouldn’t be or if they are getting too many points when they are about the same level as their opponent.  You can also just take the easy route to profits and sign up for a subscription with our handicappers and allow them to beat the NBA point spreads for you.  Looking for a place to get in on the action?  Take a look at BetUS and their $500 in FREE bonus money for new subscribers!

1. Los Angeles Lakers 22-4 (up 1)
The Lakers won four straight games last week to move back into the top spot. Kobe Bryant looks as deadly as ever, despite playing with a broken finger on his shooting hand.

2. Boston Celtics 21-5 (down 1)
Boston went 2-1 this past week and dropped just one spot to a red-hot Lakers ballclub.

3. Dallas Mavericks 20-8 (same)
Dallas went 3-1 during the week and continues to look like the most legitimate challenger in the Western Conference.

4. Orlando Magic 20-7 (up 1)
Orlando went 3-1 during the week and remains my pick to meet Boston in the Eastern Conference Finals this season.

5. Atlanta Hawks 19-7 (down 1)
The Hawks went 2-1 during the week and still have the look of a team that could seriously challenge Boston, Orlando and Cleveland in the Eastern Conference.

6. Cleveland Cavaliers 20-8 (same)
Cleveland went a solid 3-1 during the week but still have the look of being just the third or fourth best team in the East.

7. Denver Nuggets 19-9 (same)
Denver went a respectable 2-2 during the week that just passed and look like they’re going to be one of the top three teams in the Western Conference this season along with L.A. and Dallas.

8. Phoenix Suns 18-9 (up 1)
Phoenix went 2-1 in Week 8 and remains the only team in the league not to lose a single home contest this season.

9. Houston Rockets 16-11 (up 1)
Houston went 3-1 during the past week and remains arguably the biggest bunch of overachievers in the league this season.

10. Portland Trail Blazers 17-12 (up 4)
No Greg Oden? No Problem for the gifted Blazers. Portland went 3-1 during the week and still look like a team many may want to avoid once the postseason rolls around.

11. Utah Jazz 16-11 (down 3)
Utah went a respectable 2-2 during the week but still need to find a bit more consistency before they can be considered an elite contender in the powerful Western Conference.

12. San Antonio Spurs 14-10 (down 1)
San Antonio went 2-1 during the week but I’m just not too sure this year’s Spurs team has what it takes to get the job done in the long run.

13. Oklahoma City 13-13 (down 1)
Oklahoma City went a disappointing 1-3 during Week 8, but remains one of the best surprises of the young season.

14. Memphis Grizzlies 12-15 (up 3)
Memphis went 2-2 during the past week, but more importantly, showed that they are a team that won’t just roll over and play dead for anyone anymore.

15. Miami Heat 13-12 (up 3)
Miami went 2-1 during the week but the Heat are clearly relying far too heavily on superstar shooting guard Dwyane Wade.

16. Charlotte Bobcats 10-16 (down 3)
Charlotte has been very solid defensively this season, but went a poor 1-3 during the past week to fall three spots in the weekly power rankings.

17. Milwaukee Bucks 11-14 (down 2)
Milwaukee went 0-3 during the week and needs to give Brandon Jennings some more offensive support while playing much better defense for head coach Scott Skiles.

18. L.A. Clippers 12-14 (up 5)
L.A. went 3-1 during the past week and has the look of a team hell-bent on reaching the playoffs this season.

19. Sacramento Kings 12-14 (up 1)
Sacramento has been one of my favorite teams to watch all season long and went a productive 2-2 during Week 8.

20. New Orleans Hornets 12-14 (down 1)
New Orleans went a respectable 2-2 during the past week and remains close to .500 thanks to the immense contributions of all-star point guard Chris Paul.

21. Detroit Pistons 11-16 (down 5)
The Pistons hit a tailspin during the past week, losing all four of their games to fall five spots in the weekly power rankings as they continue their season-long search for their new identity.

22. Toronto Raptors 13-17 (down 1)
Toronto went 2-2 in week 8, but has underachieved immensely this season if you ask me.

23. Chicago Bulls 10-15 (up 2)
Chicago went 2-1 last week and showed the first signs of life since just after the regular season began almost two months ago.

24. New York Knicks 10-17 (down 2)
New York went 2-2 during the past week, but clearly has some problems playing defense that will hamper the ballclub whenever they play an elite contender.

25. Indiana Pacers 9-16 (down 1)
Indiana went 1-3 last week and appears to be in big trouble without team leader Danny Granger.

26. Minnesota Timberwolves 5-23 (up 1)
Minnesota went a solid 2-2 in Week 8 and clearly has a blossoming star on their hands in rookie point guard Johnny Flynn.

27. Philadelphia 76ers 7-20 (up 2)
Philadelphia went 2-2 last week but have some lingering problems with its ability to score consistently and play better than average defense.

28. Washington Wizards 8-17 (up 2)
Washington went 1-3 this past week and remains the biggest group of underachieving losers in the league if you ask me!

29. Golden State Warriors 7-19 (down 3)
Golden State went 0-3 last week and are once again being victimized for playing Don Nelson’s version of ‘small ball’.

30. New Jersey Nets 2-26 (down 2)
New Jersey went 0-4 last week and look like one of the best ATS teams to wager on this season – as long as you bet against them.
