Don’t read too much into Miami’s win at Portland the other night. The Heat caught a break when LaMarcus Aldridge didn’t suit up for the Blazers because of a knee contusion. His absence was huge because it left a big void in the paint and Miami was able to exploit that all game long. But even after that win, Miami is still a team that has only won three of their last eight games. Their defense on the road has not been good recently as they’ve allowed over 100 points in three of their last four. And that’s not good when facing a Denver team that is averaging 104 points on 45.9% shooting on their home floor.
Denver has absolutely dominated opponents on their home floor this season. The Nuggets are 8-1 and seven of the eight wins have come by at least 9 points or more. Denver has also dominated Miami on this court winning the last three meetings by 11, 26, and 16 points. The Nuggets are also looking to avenge an earlier season loss at Miami in which they scored just 88 points; their lowest offensive output of the season.
Miami is playing this game with a game at the Lakers tomorrow night. And that is a big advantage for the Nuggets. “Playing fast in altitude, I think other teams feel that,” said Denver coach George Karl. “We always seem to find a place in the second half where the energy falls in our lap. And I think sometimes coaches coach differently here. Sometimes they’re coaching to get more energy, and sometimes they give you a window to bust the game open because they’re playing their bench a little longer than normal. I think there’s subtle things that, because of the altitude, fall in our direction.”
