Lakers Most Valuable NBA Franchise
December 10, 2009
Forbes recently released their list of the most valuable franchises in the NBA and it’s no surprise to me that the Los Angeles Lakers are at the top of that list. The Lakers are up 4% over last year after winning the world championship, bringing their value up to $607 million.
The Lakers replaced the New York Knicks at the top of the list, whose recent losing ways have caused them to drop 4% from last year down to $586 million. The Knicks had led the rankings for the past four years.
The list is dominated by the biggest cities, with the Chicago Bulls coming in at third with $511 million, then a few surprises to round out the top five with the Detroit Pistons at $479 million and the Cleveland Cavaliers at $476 million (of course, with LeBron James I guess I shouldn’t be surprised the Cavs are so high on the list, but we are talking about Cleveland here, a city being hit pretty hard by unemployment.)
The bottom team on the list is the Milwaukee Bucks at $254 million, leading a list of 2 teams that lost money in the 2008-09 season which included the Mavs, Blazers, Magic, Hawks, Kings, Pacers, Bobcats, Nets, Timberwolves, Hornets, and Grizzlies as well.
