Are the Lakers Becoming a Dynasty?

December 3, 2009

Harrison Moore brought up an interesting topic today with an article on if the Lakers are the next legendary team in the NBA? I’m a huge Lakers fan so this was especially interesting to me, let’s take a look at what he had to say as I add a few of my own comments.

It’s true expectations kind of dropped off after the team’s 7-3 start, but that was mostly due to the injury to Pau Gasol. Phoenix might be off to a great start, but does anyone think that when the Lakers are functioning with all of their guns on the floor that the Suns can compete?

What has Gasol’s return meant? No team the Lakers have faced has been capable of remaining within 10 digits of their final score, never mind beating them. Now the Lakers are starting to show the tip of what could very well be an insurmountable iceberg. How have some of the NBA’s other great teams fared? The 1996 Bulls started off at 10-2 before capturing the NBA’s best ever record of 72-10. Two years later the Bulls started off at 12-9 before winning 50 of their next 61 games. The 1972 33-straight-win Lakers started off at 6-3 before finishing at 69-13.  The 2001 Lakers finished with a record of 56-26, 11 fewer victories than they had earned in their previous regular season, before going undefeated until the Finals.

Phil Jackson has been saying that the Lakers are close to where they need to be. Given how this team has played lately, I think that means they could be downright scary if they take any more steps forward. Champions don’t mean teams turn into dynasties. The Heat won and then fell off the map. You have to think more of the Bulls with Jordan, Celtics with Russell, Lakers with Magic, Celtics with Bird as the kinds of teams that define dynasty. This Lakers team has the skills to be mentioned in the same breath as those with the young nucleus and superstar power on the roster.
