Avery Johnson to the Nets?
December 3, 2009
The New Jersey Nets are a mess right now, and fired head coach Lawrence Frank since he couldn’t even muster up a win yet for the team almost a month and a half into the season. Now the team will be headed up by general manager Kiki Vandeweghe. Why did the team pass up on Avery Johnson? Why should he even have been considered? Janet Kessler wrote a nice article on what if the Nets had hired Avery. Let’s take a look at some of the points that she made.
Johnson is available and he’s a guy who has won a coach of the year award and has plenty of playoff and even Finals experience. He ran the Spurs offense when they were winning championships. The knock on Avery is that he has a strong personality, but that fits in perfectly when you need to rebuild a young team. He’s a strong disciplinarian which this team could probably use.
The interesting part is Devin Harris. He experienced the coach a few years ago back when the players ran Johnson out of Dallas. How would he react to bringing Johnson on board?
