NBA Predictions: Hawks 76ers

November 28, 2009

The Philadelphia Sixers have been struggling, which is a big reason they are a five-point underdog with the NBA point spreads on Friday night as they head to Atlanta to take on the Hawks. Eric Williams is going to help you with your wager here with a detailed writeup on the game, and his free NBA picks show he is taking Atlanta -5. I’ll be totally honest and admit that I am not a happy camper after the Atlanta Hawks (11-3 SU, 11-3 ATS, 10-4 O/U) let me down in a big way on Thanksgiving Day.

The Hawks had a chance to make a huge statement in their Turkey Day matchup against the Orlando Magic, but failed miserably, losing to the Magic 93-76 and letting down pro basketball betting backers as 3.5-point home favorites in the loss.

It wasn’t so much that the Hawks lost, it was the way they lost that bothered me most. Atlanta was held to a pitiful 25 points in the second half, including just 11 in the fourth quarter.

Things were so bad Magic backup point guard Anthony Johnson outscored the Hawks by four points in the final stanza all by himself.

Atlanta will be back on the court tonight to take on a struggling Philadelphia 76ers (5-10 SU, 6-9 ATS, 7-8 O/U) team that has lost four consecutive games, six of seven and eight of 10 overall.

The Sixers lost to the Boston Celtics 113-103 on Wednesday night but narrowly covered the NBA point spread as 13-point road underdogs just as I predicted.

Philadelphia got a team-high 25 points along with nine boards and nine assists from swingman Andre Iguodala in the loss.

ATS 411 on Both Teams

Atlanta

* Hawks are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games as a favorite.
* Hawks are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 road games.
* The Hawks have failed to cover the spread in three consecutive games after covering the spread in their previous six games.

Philadelphia

* 76ers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games as an underdog.
* 76ers are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 home games.

Despite their losing ways, the Sixers have covered the spread in three consecutive games and four of six overall.

* Under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in Philadelphia.
* Under is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings.
* Road team is 5-2-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings.

Analysis: The Hawks are going to be in a foul mood coming into this contest and are going to make the Sixers pay tonight while covering the spread with just a bit of room to spare.

The Hawks have gone an impressive 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games as a favorite and 5-2 ATS in their last seven road games.

Combine those trends with the fact that the 76ers have gone a pathetic 0-6 ATS in their last six home games and it all adds up to an emphatic Hawks win and NBA moneyline cover.

Take the Atlanta Hawks -5.
