D’Antoni Should Have Went to Chicago
December 23, 2009
Adrian Wojnarowski has an interesting observation on the situation dealing with the Chicago Bulls head coaching position. There has been a lot of talk recently about how this team needs to get rid of Vinny Del Negro, but Adrian takes a look at how things would have been different if Mike D’Antoni hadn’t passed on the job two years ago.
Right now both teams are a mess, but I think Chicago has at last some hope of coming out of it. This is the team that took the Boston Celtics to seven games in the first round of last year’s playoffs. The Bulls went after D’Antoni, but he thought they gave him an offer below his asking price and he never entered serious negotiations. So for chasing the money he passed up on a chance to win. Just think about how great Derrick Rose would have been in his offense, instead of Larry Hughes or Chris Duhon?
Del Negro didn’t even really stand a chance in Chicago. He was the third option behind D’Antoni and Doug Collins. He didn’t really have any experience so was going to be easily expendable. He was offered a relatively short deal and lost Ben Gordon this summer to free agency.
If things don’t start turning around quickly for D’Antoni in New York, he might get another chance at that Chicago job sooner rather than later.
