NBA Point Spreads: Bulls vs. Jazz

November 26, 2009

This Thanksgiving you’ll want to tune in to some NBA action when the Chicago Bulls head to Utah to take on the Jazz. The current NBA point spreads show that Utah is a 7-point favorite, with the total listed at 195. These teams are not big on shooting threes, and Chicago has certainly missed the instant offense of Ben Gordon off the bench. The Bulls are averaging only 91.4 points a game, have covered four of their 13 games, and have lost each of their last three games by fifteen points or more. They’re shooting only 43% on the season. I wonder how long Vinny Del Negro is going to keep his job with an overall performance like that.

Here are some of the NBA pro basketball sports betting trends as they relate to this matchup:

* CHI has lost five of its last seven games SU
* CHI has covered one of its last six games
* CHI has played five of its last seven games UNDER the total
* CHI has lost four of its last five road games SU
* CHI has covered one of its last five road games
* CHI has played five of its last seven road games UNDER the total
* UTAH has won and covered four of its last six games SU
* UTAH has played five of its last seven games OVER the total
* UTAH has covered two of its last six home games
* UTAH has played five of its last seven home games OVER the total

Chicago is on the road for an extended period because of the Ringling Bros. circus that is currently at the United Center. They’ve now been on the road since November 17. This is their first game on Thanksgiving in 42 years.

Here are some of the NBA trends as they concern both of these teams:

* CHI has covered the last four meetings
* Four of the last six meetings have gone UNDER the total
* CHI has covered four of the last five meetings as the road team
* UTAH has had the shooting edge in five of the last seven meetings
* UTAH has had the rebounding edge in seven of the last ten meetings

Utah has missed some of its role players. Matt Harpring has a knee problem that may prevent him from ever playing again. Kyle Korver is still out with his knee injury, and that is Utah’s big three-point threat. C.J. Miles had thumb surgery and is also out. However, they’re getting points out of Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer, who are combining for 38 a game. Boozer had 26 points in 32 and a half minutes in Utah’s 104-94 loss to Oklahoma City a couple of days ago, so he’s not in bad form.

Wesley Matthews, the rookie from Wisconsin, has started the last six games at the big guard spot, and has averaged ten points in that time. Paul Millsap has been coming off the bench mostly, and he was a big catalyst in a win at San Antonio a week ago, tallying 20 points in 37 minutes of play. Mehmet Okur has been a welcome returnee, coming back against Oklahoma City after missing three games with the flu.

Chicago has won the last three meetings, covering the last four. The last time they met, Gordon scored 26 points, but he’s not around anymore, having gone off to Detroit. Tyrus Thomas is out of action, and that is of particular concern, because this team suffered from lack of inside scoring to begin with. Taj Gibson, a rookie, has been getting playing time, but he is too foul-prone.

There have been times when Luol Deng has been the starting power forward. Utah has the ability to come with Boozer and Millsap up front, and that’s too much. We’re laying the points with the Jazz, the seven-point favorite in the NBA odds.

With the free NBA picks offered by Jay today, he’s taking Utah -7.
