Ron Artest’s Advice to Tiger Woods

December 16, 2009

On Tuesday, one of the NBA’s most famous and infamous players, Ron Artest, came to the defense of fallen golf superstar Tiger Woods. In a touching, and definitely bizarre letter titled “An Open Letter to Tiger Woods,” the Los Angeles Lakers forward came forward on his website RonArtest.com, defending Woods, who in the last week admitted to marital infidelity to his wife of five years, Elin Nordgren Woods. Woods, who has won 14 majors, is the No. 1 golfer in the world. After a Thanksgiving...

NBA Week 7 Power Rankings

December 16, 2009

One of the tools that NBA handicappers use to make sure that they have the best chance of beating the NBA point spreads are power rankings. Each week Eric Williams posts his power rankings with his thoughts on why each team is placed where they are. I think it’s a pretty good read and something to keep in mind as you look to make your NBA picks for this week. If you are looking for a great place to get in on the action, then take a look at the $500 in match bonus money available to our readers...

Chalmers Benched For Being Late

December 16, 2009

Heat point guard Mario Chalmers was not in Miami’s starting lineup Tuesday night against the Toronto Raptors, marking the first time he has come off the bench in his young career. The team initially did not specify the reason for Chalmers’ benching, but it was punishment for arriving late to the afternoon shootaround. Last season Chalmers became the first Heat rookie to start all 82 games (plus he started the seven playoff games). He was replaced in the starting lineup by Carlos Arroyo,...

Heat’s Richardson Misses 2nd Straight Game

December 16, 2009

Heat forward Quentin Richardson will miss his second consecutive game Tuesday due to a strained right hamstring. Yakhouba Diawara will start in his place when the Heat host the Raptors. Richardson, who lost 25 pounds during the offseason, has started 16 of the 17 games he’s played this season, but Tuesday marked the sixth game he’s missed. Miami’s game against Toronto was the Heat’s 23rd game, which means Richardson (8.2 points, 47. rebounds per game) will have missed a little...

West Inactive Cavs v. Nets

December 16, 2009

Delonte West is back on the bench for the Cleveland Cavaliers. West was listed as inactive for the Cavaliers’ game against New Jersey on Tuesday night. This isn’t a real surprise since he has been in and out of the lineup this season while dealing with personal issues. West has battled bipolar disorder and was arrested over the summer on weapons possession charges in Maryland. The case is still pending. West has played in 16 of Cleveland’s 24 games this season, averaging 6.1...

Devin Harris Ejected On Flagrant Foul

December 16, 2009

Devin Harris has been ejected from New Jersey’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers after committing a flagrant foul. Harris practically (and accidentally) almost took off the head of Cavs forward Jamario Moon as Moon rose for a breakaway dunk. That came with 3:48 remaining in the game and resulted in a flagrant-two foul and automatic ejection for Harris. LeBron James quickly approached and wrapped his arms around Harris underneath the basket, but it was clear no one intended to fight. In...

McGrady Makes Return

December 16, 2009

Tracy McGrady will make his season debut Tuesday night against the Detroit Pistons, almost nine months after undergoing microfracture surgery on his left knee. Houston Rockets head coach Rick Adelman announced the decision to play McGrady about an hour before the game. He said McGrady will play about seven minutes, all in the first half. McGrady said he was “extremely nervous” to play for the first time since Feb. 9. McGrady was in and out of the lineup all of last season and played...

Top Five Small Forwards of All Time

December 15, 2009

George Mercurio recently did a slideshow detailing his top five small forwards of all-time, so I figured it was worth a mention with a few of my own thoughts sprinkled in there. His criteria was based on both individual success and team success, thus cancelling out great role players like Robert Horry who won a ton of championships but don’t really compare to greats like Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing who faded into the sunset without a single title. 5. Elgin Baylor – During the...

The Detroit Pistons’ Rodney Stuckey and the Utah Jazz’s Deron Williams today were named the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Monday, Dec. 7, through Sunday, Dec. 13. Stuckey guided the Pistons to a 3-0 week by putting up 27 points per game on 53% shooting.  He also added six assists, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game.  He hit the game-winning field goal with 8.7 seconds left back on the 9th when the Pistons beat the Sixers in Philadelphia. Williams...

Byron Scott Hired as ESPN Analyst

December 15, 2009

Byron Scott has been hired back on at ESPN as an NBA analyst after being fired this year as head coach of the New Orleans Hornets.  Scott had spent more than five seasons in New Orleans and even won the NBA’s coach of the year for the 2007-08 season.  Scott also coached the New Jersey Nets from 2000-04, guiding them to the NBA Finals in two different seasons. Scott worked at ESPN following his stint with the Nets and will rejoin the broadcast in the studio starting next month. Do you want...

Rockets’ Tough Schedule

December 15, 2009

Houston Rockets coach Rick Adelman criticized the NBA on Monday for his team’s schedule which includes four back-to-back games over the next two weeks.  It all starts tonight when Houston has to face Detroit at home before flying to Denver to play the Nuggets tomorrow night.  Then on Friday they pay a visit to the Mavericks before returning home on Saturday to take on the Thunder.  The Rockets then will have to play two games on consecutive nights twice more during the week of Christmas. Houston...

Trevor Ariza Suspended One Game

December 15, 2009

Forward Trevor Ariza of the Houston Rockets has been suspended for a game by the NBA after he was ejected from a game in Toronto for throwing a forearm at Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan.  The suspension was handed down on Monday and Ariza will sit for Tuesday’s game against the Detroit Pistons. Ariza has played a big role for the Rockets this season as he has put up 17 points per game, second on the team.  Ariza has started every game this season and leads the team with 38.7 minutes per game....

Stephen Curry Left Too Early

December 15, 2009

Steven Resnick wrote an interesting article today detailing how Stephen Curry should have stayed for his senior season at Davidson and his progress has been hampered as a result.  Curry was taken with the seventh overall pick by the Golden State Warriors last summer in the 2009 NBA draft. In his junior season at Davidson, Curry switched from shooting guard to the point, since he was too short to be a legitimate shooting guard at the NBA level.  He only had one year at the point under his belt,...

NBA’s Surprises & Disappointments 2009-10

December 14, 2009

Marcel Mansour recently wrote an article giving his thoughts on the NBA’s biggest surprises and disappointments so far in 2009, and he made some good points that are worth a look.  Let’s take a look at what he thought: Most Surprising Players Brandon Jennings Even though Jennings has struggled recently, he is still the most surprising NBA player through the first quarter of the season. Jennings was the top high school prospect two years ago, but after his immense struggles in Europe...

Is Brandon Jennings Changing Basketball

December 14, 2009

Kevin Roberts recently wrote an article that attempted to answer the question of is Brandon Jennings changing basketball?  For those of you who don’t know, Brandon Jennings decided to head to Europe to play professional basketball instead of playing one year at the University of Arizona (some say he failed his SATs, so wasn’t going to be allowed to play anyway).  Then last summer he was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks with the 10th overall pick in the 2009 draft. It didn’t take...

2009-10 Early All-Star Voting

December 14, 2009

Five of the NBA’s top six scorers are in position to start the 2010 All-Star game at the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas on February 14th.   Carmelo Anthony and Kobe Bryant, the league’s top scorers, pace the Western Conference voting, while LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, fourth and fifth, lead everyone out East. (See the complete totals in the official release.) Bryant is the overall leader with 692,518 votes. The three-time All-Star MVP is averaging 28.8 points a game for the...

Mavs’ Howard Sits Out Against Charlotte

December 14, 2009

Dallas Mavericks forward Josh Howard is inactive for Saturday night’s game against the Charlotte Bobcats.  Dallas head coachRick Carlisle is resting Howard, who returned Tuesday night after missing 13 games to rehabilitate his surgically repaired left ankle, as precaution after Dallas played at Miami on Friday night.  With the team not having another back-to-back until late in December, the Mavs are hoping he’ll be ready to go in two straight nights by then.  Howard missed the first...

Hamilton Returns to Pistons

December 14, 2009

Richard Hamilton returned to the Detroit Pistons’ lineup Saturday after missing 21 games with a right ankle sprain.  He scored 25 points in Detroit’s opener in Memphis on Oct. 28, but didn’t play again until Saturday’s game against Golden State. It was a big loss for Detroit to not have Hamilton in the lineup, especially offensively since he has led the Pistons in scoring for the last seven seasons.  The return of Hamilton doesn’t mean this team suddenly got up to...

O’Neal and Gibson Questionable for Thunder Game

December 14, 2009

Cleveland coach Mike Brown says Shaquille O’Neal is more likely to play tonight than Daniel Gibson but he went on to say he wouldn’t be surprised if both ended up sitting out.  Both still listed as questionable for tonight’s game against the Thunder.  O’Neal was poked by Portland’s Joel Przybilla while going up for a shot in the third quarter on Friday night. He was taken to the Cleveland Clinic after the game for precautionary tests.  Oklahoma City does not have...

Nets’ Douglas-Roberts Injures Knee

December 14, 2009

As if things weren’t bad enough for the New Jersey Nets, how they have to worry about an injury to rookie Chris Douglas-Roberts.  Coach Kiki Vandeweghe says the Nets are awaiting results of an MRI that Douglas-Roberts had on his left knee.  Vandeweghe wasn’t sure how Douglas-Roberts, did play 38 minutes in the 107-91 loss Friday at Indiana, was hurt.  If he is forced to miss any significant stretch of time, it would be a definite blow to the Nets.  Douglas-Roberts is averaging 16.2...

Comparing Kobe & Ron Artest to Jordan & Rodman

December 14, 2009

Mike B. posted an interesting article the other day saying that Kobe Bryant and Ron Artest are wannabes.  Basically he thinks that they are copying Michael Jordan and Dennis Rodman, wanting to be the second coming of both of these players. I don’t know whether it’s just because Kobe is one of the best players of all-time and the fact that Artest does a great job of rebounding and is always up to crazy antics, but I’m not sure why else the comparisons would be drawn. Who didn’t...

Merril’s Lakers at Jazz Picks

December 12, 2009

Steve Merril is on an incredible 26-12 run as he continues to help his clients cash in over the books.  In the NBA there is nobody better at producing winning NBA picks on a nightly basis, now at 55-31 (64%) over his last 86.  If you are looking for someone to help you beat the NBA point spreads on a nightly basis then look no further than this expert handicapper.  Last night he was one of the few out there who was on the Jazz to beat the Lakers in front of their home crowd, and they came through...

Lewis Refuses to Re-Enter Game

December 12, 2009

It seemed like a strange incident on Thursday night, when the Orlando Magic were in Utah playing the Jazz.  Rashard Lewis refused to re-enter the game in the second quarter, but Stan Van Gundy said it was no big deal and a one-time thing.  Van Gundy believes the act was not in defiance but in the best interest of the team.  Lewis had two fouls and his replacement was playing well. Van Gundy does think that Lewis always tries to act in the best interest of the team, and is in no way a selfish player. ...

Kobe Bryant Injures Right Index Finger

December 12, 2009

Not much has gone wrong for the Los Angeles Lakers as they have blazed off to the best record in the league.  Now they have to deal with a little bit of adversity as Kobe Bryant has an avulsion fracture in his shooting hand, which is a tiny fragment of bone tearing away near a tendon or ligament.  The good news is that he was able to return to the floor after spending a part of the second quarter in the locker room. Bryant hurt the top joint on the index finger on his right hand while reaching...

Famed Broadcaster Hundley Back With Lakers

December 12, 2009

Hot Rod Hundley thought he had retired from broadcasting, but he has joined the Los Angeles Lakers broadcasting team for a short stint of games.  Hundley, the venerated voice of the Utah Jazz, started Friday night against Minnesota and doesn’t have to wait long before calling his old team.  Jazz fans will get a chance to see their longtime play-by-play man in Salt Lake City on Saturday night when the Lakers visit. The 75-year-old Hall of Fame honoree is filling in for television commentator...

How Iverson Affects 76ers Playoff Picture

December 12, 2009

Eric Williams is a born and raised Philadelphian so when he wrote about the return of Allen Iverson and how it affects the team’s playoff chances I thought it was worth a look.  He thinks bringing back Iverson to the city he started his NBA career with was a no-brainer move for a team has had problems on offense and also filling seats in their arena.  Looking to get in on the NBA betting action?  Get signed up at BetUS and enjoy $500 in FREE bonus money! With that being said, Williams does...

Merril’s Blazers at Pacers Picks

Steve Merril has long been known as one of the best NBA handicappers in the business and his recent 55-31 (64%) over his last 84 with NBA picks continues to help him make his name in this business.  Simply put, there are few out there who can take down the books on a nightly basis like Merril can, and he’ll continue to pound away at the NBA point spreads for the rest of the season, making profits for his clients along the way.  Last night he picked apart the line on the total for the Portland...

Lakers Most Valuable NBA Franchise

December 10, 2009

Forbes recently released their list of the most valuable franchises in the NBA and it’s no surprise to me that the Los Angeles Lakers are at the top of that list.  The Lakers are up 4% over last year after winning the world championship, bringing their value up to $607 million. The Lakers replaced the New York Knicks at the top of the list, whose recent losing ways have caused them to drop 4% from last year down to $586 million.  The Knicks had led the rankings for the past four years. The...

Coach Brown Ejected From Rockets Game

December 10, 2009

Things did not go well for the Cleveland Cavaliers last night, espeically coach Mike Brown.  Brown was ejected late in the second quarter for arguing a non-call when his star LeBron James drove to the basket. James was posting up the Rockets Shane Battier.  He turned to shoot but Houston forward Chuck Hayes slapped at the ball, causing James to miss his shot.  Hayes grabbed the rebound and started a Rocket fast break that led to a score. It didn’t take Brown long to storm onto the court...

Ben Gordon Ankle Injury

December 10, 2009

The Detroit Pistons were able to beat the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night despite being without guard Ben Gordon.  Gordon had to sit out due to a sprained left ankle.  This is the same ankle he injured back in late November, when he was forced to miss two games before returning to action. Gordon is a key component to this Detroit offense as he averages 18.7 points per game.  He only played 12 minutes Sunday against Washington before deciding to sit out this one. This is a tough break for...

Fargo’s Celtics at Wizards Picks

December 10, 2009

Matt Fargo continues to impress with his 34-21 NBA picks run.  If you have been looking for an expert handicapper who helps clients beat the NBA point spreads on a daily basis, then Fargo can be your man.  He has been winning profits and building bankrolls for years and will continue to do so all season long.  Let’s take a look at the kind of analysis that you will find each night when you sign up, taking a look at how he took the Wizards +8 over the Celtics the other night. Washington is...

Granger Out 4 to 6 Weeks

December 9, 2009

If things weren’t bad enough right now for the Indiana Pacers, now they have lost scoring leader Danny Granger for at least four weeks with a foot injury.  Indiana is coming off a tough stretch in which they have lost nine of their last 10 contests. Granger would miss a minimum of four to six weeks with a torn right plantar fascia, the tissue across the bottom of the foot connecting the heel and toes. The good news is that the forward won’t need surgery and will immediately start with...

Luke Walton as Laker Broadcaster

December 9, 2009

Injured forward Luke Walton is trading his Los Angeles Lakers jersey for a seat behind the microphone, but it is just a temporary move.  He must be looking for something to do since he has been out with a back injury after playing in the season’s first nine games.  His father Bill was a longtime broadcaster and studio analyst with the Los Angeles Clippers, NBC and ESPN after struggling through injuries for most of his playing career. Walton will fill in for radio color commentator Mychal...

Will the Bulls Fire Del Negro

December 9, 2009

Josh Herman noticed something that I hadn’t quite put together recently, and that is the Bulls like to get rid of their coaches right around Christmas.  Will the Bulls fire Del Negro around the holiday season as well? Let’s take a look at the recent head coaches for Chicago that have left the team around this time of the year: 2001: Tim Floyd resigned on Christmas Eve, citing that it was best for himself and his family to leave.  There is no doubt though that there was pressure from...

New Orleans Hornets Player Performances

December 9, 2009

Joe Gerrity seems to know his New Orleans Hornets and recently wrote an article grading every single one of their players.   It’s important with NBA betting to know how each specific player is performing on a given team if you want to beat the NBA point spreads.  So without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the highlights. Hilton Armstrong: His shot selection is horrible and his rebounding is just as bad.  During warm-ups he takes off balance three-pointers and trick shots...
